Stockport’s Historic Heart

Bringing the Underbanks back to life

Overview

Rediscovering the Underbanks is an exciting Townscape Heritage project that aims to bring buildings back into life and reconnect people with the area by raising awareness of its unique heritage.

The project is led by Stockport Council, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and supported by a number of partners and community groups.

This will run for a five year period, with a planned programme of events that will take place during its lifetime to increase the knowledge and appreciation of the unique history of the Underbanks. It will provide heritage skills training and community activities designed to bring people into the area. These events will be made available to local people, building owners and local construction professionals. There will also be fun and interesting events for all.

This scheme will tie into a number of other regeneration projects taking place currently to encourage investment and opportunity in Stockport.

If you own a property that has been identified as a priority building (see map below), you can enquire about grant funding for eligible works to repair and restore your building.
